Idea: Mixing renewable technologies: e.g. Develop solar panels that can be suspended at an appropriate angle, attached in a south-facing direction to the vertical tower on the wind turbines (i.e. at a lower position than the spinning sails). Advantages: a) the energy collected can be converted using the same system as the energy collected from the wind, b) no new sites need to be found (avoiding planning battles for instance). Also, for offshore wind-farms, there could be small (?micro-?) wave-power turbines connected between some of the wind turbines (to again share the power conversion mechanisms). A key advantage is that some energy will be generated even when there is no wind (i.e. if cloud cover is thin enough for the photovoltaic panels to work and/or there is enough wave activity to generate wave-power).
